Revitalize Massage & Wellness, LLC – October Newsletter

Happy October, Everyone!

As the fall season settles in, I hope you’re finding moments to reflect, rejuvenate, and care for yourself. With the changing leaves and cooler air, it’s the perfect time to turn inward and focus on our well-being.

Reiki II Class Coming in January!

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be offering a Reiki II class in January! This class is for those who have already completed Reiki I and want to deepen their practice.

But what’s the difference between Reiki I and Reiki II?

  • Reiki I is all about self-healing/development and learning how to channel Reiki energy for yourself, your family/friends, and your animals. It focuses on hands-on healing techniques, basic hand positions, and getting familiar with the energy.
  • Reiki II takes your practice to the next level by introducing distance healing and learning three Reiki symbols to enhance energy flow. It allows for more specific healing intentions and a stronger connection to the Reiki energy. After Reiki II, you may practice with others for free or for a fee.

If you haven’t taken Reiki I yet, don’t worry! Reach out to me, and we can schedule your Reiki I class. It’s a beautiful step toward healing and growth.

If you’ve already taken Reiki I and would like to join the Reiki II class in January, please get in touch with me so we can coordinate a date that works for everyone interested.

October Special – $10 Off Reiki Sessions!

This month, I’m offering a special discount on Reiki sessions. Get $10 off a 60-minute Reiki session, making it just $65! If you’ve been wanting to experience the healing benefits of Reiki, now is the perfect time to schedule your session.

Revitalize Massage & Wellness, LLC August Newsletter:
Exploring the Power of Acupressure

Welcome to August’s newsletter, where we explore the ancient art of acupressure—a holistic approach used for centuries to promote well-being and alleviate various physical and emotional challenges. Acupressure involves applying gentle pressure to specific points on the body, known as acupoints, to stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities. This non-invasive therapy is a beautiful complement to your regular wellness routine and can be easily practiced at home to address common concerns like pain, anxiety, and fatigue.

Pain Relief
The LI4 (Hegu) point is a powerful acupressure point that can relieve pain. Located on the back of the hand, between the thumb and index finger, applying firm but gentle pressure to this point can help alleviate headaches, toothaches, and other forms of pain. For more detailed information, visit the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center guide here: https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/patient-education/acupressure-pain-and-headaches.

Stress/Anxiety
Are you feeling overwhelmed or anxious? The Extra-1 (Yin Tang) point is an excellent choice to help calm the mind and reduce stress. Gently pressing this point can help soothe anxiety and promote a sense of inner peace. To learn more, check out this resource: https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/patient-education/acupressure-stress-and-anxiety

Fatigue
If you’re feeling fatigued, the University of Minnesota’s Integrative Medicine department offers several videos, including this one that highlights six acupressure points to address fatigue: https://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/survivorship/fatigue-acupoints. Additionally, for those struggling with insomnia, another video resource is available here: https://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/survivorship/how-sleep-when-you-just-cant

Please see below for additional resources. I hope you find these tips helpful. At Revitalize Massage & Wellness, LLC, I am committed to supporting your journey to optimal health and well-being. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule your next session.

Karen

Welcome to the Revitalize Massage & Wellness, LLC July newsletter!

Happy 4th of July! I hope your summer is going well!

In this newsletter, I share a grounding practice to help when feeling disconnected, anxious, or experiencing other negative emotions and highlight a new service offering a free session for those currently undergoing or who are post-cancer treatment.

Grounding

When our daughter, Allie, was in yoga teacher training, she was introduced to a grounding process she shared with me. This practice has helped us both in many situations. We use this complementary health approach to refocus on the present moment when experiencing overactive thinking or feeling anxious, disconnected, or experiencing other negative emotions. Here is how it works:

  • Sit, stand, or walk as comfortably as you can in the moment. Doing this with your bare feet on the ground can be very powerful—a great summer benefit!
  • Think or state out loud:
    • 5 things you can currently see.
    • 4 things you can feel.
    • 3 things you can hear.
    • 2 things you can smell.
    • 1 good thing about yourself.

We created a flyer with this Grounding 5 4 3 2 1 practice. If you would like a copy, please contact me, and I will email it to you. For further reading about grounding, please see the resources below.

New Free Session Offering

Through my experience as an Oncology Massage therapist, clients have found that complementary health approaches can bring a feeling of relaxation while easing tension, pain, neuropathy, stress, fatigue, and other side effects of cancer treatment. My hope is that everyone going through a cancer journey finds approaches that can help ease the side effects.

To support this, I now offer a free 45-minute combination session of oncology massage, Reiki, and Craniosacral Therapy (or any combo they want to try) for individuals undergoing cancer treatment or experiencing post-treatment side effects. This session aims to determine if one or more of these approaches is right for them.

If you or someone you know is interested in scheduling or discussing this opportunity, please feel free to reach out to me at revitalize.massage.karen@gmail.com or Google Voice: 734-489-1547.

Wishing you a wonderful July and joyful July 4th celebration!

In health,
Karen

Happy May!

As the days grow longer and the sun graces us with its warmth, I find myself reflecting on the joy of laughter and the fun of Laughter Yoga.

As a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, I led laughter yoga sessions during the stay at home phase of COVID-19. Laughter Yoga combines laughter exercises with the benefits of yoga breathing. It’s a wonderful way to reconnect with our inner child and experience laughter’s many health benefits.

Current research shows that as we age, many of us tend to laugh less frequently than we did in our younger years. Laughter is not only good for the soul; it’s excellent for our physical and mental well-being.

That’s why I’m thrilled to offer free weekly laughter yoga Zoom sessions lasting 20-30 minutes to anyone who wishes to join. Feel free to share this invitation with friends, family, or anyone you believe could benefit from a laughter-filled session. See below for more details.

What is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga combines laughter exercises with yogic breathing techniques. It doesn’t require special skills, just a willingness to laugh and let go of inhibitions. Through a series of laughing and deep breathing, Laughter Yoga helps to induce laughter, leading to numerous health benefits. It’s a safe space where we let go of stress, connect with others through shared laughter, and embrace the moment with childlike joy. Each session concludes with a relaxing laughter meditation, leaving you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to start the day with a smile on your face!

Health Benefits of Laughter Yoga:

  • Stress Relief: Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels.
  • Boosts Immunity: Laughing strengthens the immune system by increasing antibody production and enhancing immune cells’ effectiveness.
  • Improves Mood: Regular laughter sessions can uplift mood, combat depression, and increase happiness.
  • Enhances Cardiovascular Health: Laughter improves blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart disease.
  • Connects People: Laughter Yoga fosters social connection and builds strong bonds among participants, promoting a sense of community and belonging.
  • Also! Many research articles note that simulated (fake) laughter has many of the same health benefits as spontaneous (real) laughter. (And usually, fake laughter turns into real laughter pretty quickly!!)

Join Our Zoom Laughter Yoga Sessions (Starting in June!):
I invite you to join our laughter-filled Zoom sessions every Tuesday morning at 8:00 am. Let’s kick-start our day with joy, positivity, and lots of laughter!

To join, simply send me a message if you’d like to participate, and I’ll provide you with the Zoom link and further details. My contact info is revitalize.massage.karen@gmail.com or Google Voice at (734) 489-1547. Also, let me know if you are interested but cannot do Tuesday mornings.

Let’s spread laughter and positivity together! Hope to see you on Tuesdays!

In health,
Karen

Happy Spring, and welcome to the April Revitalize Massage & Wellness, LLC newsletter!

As I write this newsletter, I’m enjoying a cup of green tea with hibiscus (I like tart). So, I invite you to grab your favorite drink, take a moment to relax, and enjoy reading. Plus, if you like to dig deeper, I’ve included some references to peer-reviewed articles and additional info at the bottom of the newsletter. Look for the related numbers in the section headers to geek out like I do. Cheers!

Please note that I will be out of the office the week of April 21.

April Discount!
Fresh from an enlightening Craniosacral Therapy advanced training weekend, I’m thrilled to share the knowledge I’ve gained. This month, I’m offering a $15 discount on 60-minute and 90-minute Craniosacral Therapy sessions (purchase in April and use before the end of June). With new techniques focusing on the jaw and mouth, I can now provide support for issues stemming from extensive dental treatments (keeping our mouth open for a long time may result in tensions/restrictions in the face/mouth/head) and TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) pain, as well as provide more targeted techniques for other affected areas.

April CST Discount

Since Craniosacral Therapy is closely connected with the Central Nervous System (CNS), we are spotlighting the CNS in this month’s newsletter.

Anatomy and Physiology: CNS (1)
The nervous system is like the body’s electrical wiring. One of the main components is the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord, which are protected by the skull and vertebrae. As we all know, the brain does many things, like thinking, feeling emotions, and controlling movement. Meanwhile, the spinal cord acts like a messenger, passing signals between the brain and the rest of the body. It’s a super busy system, with billions of tiny cells called neurons working together to keep everything running smoothly. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) helps free the central nervous system to perform at its best.

Optimizing nutrition: CNS (2)
We can focus on good nutrition to help keep your central nervous system (CNS) healthy and strong. Omega-3s from wild-caught fish, flaxseeds (ground or oil), and walnuts boost brain function. We can protect our neurons with antioxidants like vitamin E from almonds, spinach, and avocados and fuel neurotransmitter production with B vitamins found in leafy greens, legumes, and whole grains. We can add berries and turmeric for extra CNS protection and enjoy magnesium-rich foods like dark chocolate (my favorite!), nuts, and seeds to support nerve health. Prioritizing a diet rich in these nourishing elements can give our CNS the essential building blocks necessary for optimal function, resilience, and longevity.

Movement and the CNS (3)
Regular exercise is crucial for keeping our central nervous system (CNS) healthy. It triggers the release of mood-boosting neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin while improving cognitive function. Aerobic workouts boost blood flow to the brain, delivering essential oxygen and nutrients for optimal brain activity. Try activities like yoga or dance to challenge coordination and balance, which can enhance neural pathways and cognitive abilities. Strength training is also important, as it maintains muscle mass and coordination while reducing the risk of falls. By making movement a priority, you’ll not only improve your physical fitness but also support a strong and resilient CNS.
